Architectural Technologist Career Description

Architecture is both a science and an art. It is concerned with the built environment, the science of building, the design of structures and the people who inhabit this environment.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

Architectural technology differs from architecture in that it is more technical and broader based.

Architectural technology may be practised from home or from work in the opulent surroundings of large corporations. Architectural technologists can work indoors or outdoors, or a mixture of both. They can work on computers (computer aided draughting) or on the drawing board or undertake numerous other tasks where their knowledge of drawing is essential, but where drawing is not involved.

Requirements

What kind of personality do I need? An aptitude in drawing and the ability to analyse and solve problems are necessary characteristics for applicants.

Where can I work?

In-service training has to be completed in the practice of a qualified architect or architectural technologist. Qualified architectural technologists can open their own practices, or work in practices for municipalities or for the government.

Can I work for myself in this occupation?

Architectural technologists can start their own private practice.
